Lorain County Transit (LCT) provides bus service to Oberlin and surrounding towns. The Route 33 bus runs between Oberlin and the Cleveland Hopkins Airport (where you can connect to Cleveland public transit.) The Route 21 bus runs North to Elyria, Target, and the Midway Mall (where you can transfer to other LCT buses) and South to Wellington.

For scheduling/service questions call LCT at 440-329-5545. To speak with the dispatcher about bus status, call 1-800-406-7541 or 440-366-0258. If the bus does not arrive on time or you anticipate that the bus cannot seat all riders waiting at the bus stop, please call this number and inform the dispatcher. Taxi numbers are located at the bottom of the page if you absolutely cannot wait.

This site was maintained by the Oberlin College Transit Committee (OCTC), a student group in perpetual limbo that was nevertheless the only entity on campus negotiating Route 33 service with LCT from 2005 to 2008.This site exists for now as a way of communicating the mass transit options for the entire Oberlin community. Because it will no longer be updated after commencement week, this website assumes no responsibility for the outcome of a user's travel experience.. Effective till commencement 2008, please email us at oberlintransit@gmail.com with questions/comments/complaints about LCT service, extra college break service of Route 33, or other elements of this website. After that, PLEASE CALL LCT AT 440.328.2490 TO CONFIRM YOUR PLANS TO RIDE WITH THEM.

RECENT UPDATES SINCE 13 NOVEMBER 2007:

LCT 2007 Thanksgiving Schedule.

  • Where is the bus stop?
The bus stop for all LCT routes in Oberlin has MOVED BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL SPOT ON THE CORNER OF COLLEGE AND PLEASANT STREETS, where RAX restuarant used to be. There is a bench.

  • How much is the fare?
It now costs $4 to ride Route 33 to the Airport with you Oberlin College ID (OCID). Otherwise, it costs $7. Once again, still among the better values in town (keep in mind they're taking you a distance of 24 miles).

  • Route 33: Hopkins Airport Express

Route 33 runs directly between downtown Oberlin and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. From the airport riders can take the Cleveland RTA's rapid transit system to reach destinations in Cleveland, including Tower City, University Circle, and the Greyhound and Amtrak stations.

Bus Stops: In Oberlin, the bus stops at a green LCT sign near the corner of East College Street and Pleasant Street. At the airport, the bus stops at a green LCT sign marked "Cleveland Link" on the Upper Level outside the United Airlines ticketing entrance (NOT outside the baggage area) The RTA rapid station is located at the lowest level of the airport.

Fare is $4 for Route 33, when you present your OCID to the driver. Otherwise, the Route 33 fare will be $6. Drivers do not provide change.

    Schedule: ~~~ Route 33 operates 7 days a week.

    Increased Service for OC Breaks:
LCT has agreed to run extra buses to accomodate heavy student demand on college breaks.

Despite extra buses, anticipate crowding. To ensure you make your flight:
    1. Show up early. The bus does not wait long at the bus stops, especially at the airport.
    2. Don't plan to take the run that will get you to the airport right on-time. Take one or two runs before that in case you miss the bus, it's too full for you to get on, or the bus is running late.
    3. Keep in mind that LCT buses lack luggage racks. Packing light will make your ride much more manageable for all riders.

    Public Transit to Amtrak Stations

Elyria and Cleveland both have Amtrak stations served by The Capitol Limited (Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington) and Lake Shore Limited trains (Chicago, Rochester, New York, Boston). Both trains stop in Ohio late at night and have a tendency to be delayed. If you take public transportation to Amtrak, or even if you're just riding Amtrak, be prepared to be very patient. This is what happens when the automobile takes over an entire nation for 50 years.

Regardless, the train is a timeless and rewarding travel experience if you're not in a rush.

For Amtrak reservations and to check the departure/arrival status of any given train, call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or visit www.amtrak.com

Cleveland Amtrak Station: open and fully staffed 9:30pm to 1pm (closed between 1pm and 9:29pm.) Tickets and baggage checking are available at this location.

200 Cleveland Memorial Shoreway, Cleveland OH, 44114.
    MAP

STARTING AT OBERLIN: Take Route 33 to Cleveland Airport. From there, go two flights downstairs to take the RTA Rapid Red Line to Tower City (25 minutes). There, you can transfer for a short ride on the Waterfront line run to the Amtrak station along the Lake Erie shore. The train will stop at Amtrak on request only, but the North Coast stop is relatively close as well. If you have a lot of time before your train, you might want to spend it in Downtown or Ohio City, for there are virtually no restaurants, shops, or bars near the Amtrak station.

GETTING TO OBERLIN: Unless you plan to spend the next day in Cleveland, you might prefer arriving at the Elyria station and taking a taxi from there to campus. Should you still choose to arrive in Cleveland, you can take RTA Rapid Transit to Hopkins Airport and wait around till the LCT arrives (it's open 24 hours and policed) or get a taxi or rented car from there. Click for local taxi information.

Elyria Amtrak Station: unstaffed but lit; you cannot purchase tickets or check baggage at this station.
410 East River Street, Elyria OH 44035
    MAP

The last LCT bus gets to Elyria at around 9 PM (on weekdays only) and the trains arrive after hours. Also, it might not be that pleasant to wait around the Elyria station alone and in the cold. There are plans to renovate the larger adjacent building next to the station, but until then, the current station conditions are sub-par. The best possible option is to take a taxi or have a friend drive you. Click here for driving directions from Oberlin to the train station.

STARTING IN OBERLIN: Take LCT Route 21 north to Elyria. Upon boarding the bus, tell the driver that you want to get off at Broad Street in downtown. When you get off the bus, make a right and walk eastbound along Broad street, past the bulk of the commercial district, till you get to East Bridge Street. Make a left and walk down till right before the railroad overpass, in which you make a right on East River Street. If you aren't too crazy about waiting in the unstaffed station, there is a bar called "The Train Station"just a little bit further down East River Street.

GETTING TO OBERLIN: The station is unstaffed, so having a friend or taxi pick you up is the most convenient and safest way to get from Elyria Amtrak to Oberlin.
If you are coming to Elyria from the east, its convenient to call the cab company when you stop in Cleveland. Tell them that you'll be arriving in about a half an hour. That way, you won't have to wait around for that long.

    Public Transit to Greyhound Stations

For Greyhound reservations, call 1-800-231-2222, or visit www.greyhound.com/home.asp

If you are traveling eastbound from Oberlin (that is, going to Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, etc.) you might want to consider starting at the Cleveland stop instead of Elyria because any bus stopping at Elyria eventually stops at Cleveland as well, and with a layover usually lasting around an hour. Thus, it potentially saves money and time to start an eastbound trip in Cleveland. Additionally, less buses stop at Elyria in general.

Cleveland Greyhound Station: renovated, heated, secure, retro; 24 hours a day.
    216-781-0520
1465 Chester Ave. Cleveland, OH 44114
    MAP

STARTING IN OBERLIN: Take LCT Route 33 to the Cleveland Airport and transfer to the RTA Rapid Red Line. Get off at Tower City. Go outside the front entrance of Tower City to the Public Square. A taxi stand should be to your left, in front of the hotel, should you want to take one. Otherwise, you can walk to the station. It should take around 15 minutes. Excercise caution if walking alone at night. You can also walk out the Renaissance Hotel entrance of Tower City, wait on the corner of Superior and West Roadway, and take any 55 bus to the Greyhound station.

Elyria Greyhound Station: Spotty hours of operation, Closed on Sundays and Holidays, Ticket purchases available only when open.
    440-322-0000
365 Broad St. Elyria, OH 44035

    MAP

STARTING AT OBERLIN: Take LCT Route 21 north to Elyria. Tell the bus driver you are going to Broad Street. They should let you off in downtown Elyria near the main town square. Make a right and walk eastbound. The station, across the street, doubles with a parcel storefront marked First Express, but the familiar Greyhound logo should be visible through the front window.

GETTING TO OBERLIN: When you walk out of the Greyhound Station front entrance along Broad Street, make a right. Walk past Ely Park and cross Court Street. Then, cross Broad Street. On the 45 minute mark of every daytime hour, the LCT Route 21 should stop there, heading toward Oberlin. If you want to make things simpler (yet costlier) for yourself, Lorain County Cab is literally based across the street from the Greyhound Station. Just walk in.

Megabus provides inexpensive service directly from Tower City to Toledo, Chicago, and other regional connections.

    Taxis and Shared Rides

Such is life, LCT can be unpredictable. We recommend that you allow yourself extra time to ensure that you can make your flight, bus, or train. Alternatively, you can call a taxi or share rides with other students.

The Oberlin Online Classified section has postings for rides offered and wanted to nearby stations, the airport, and points beyond.

Car sharing is now a reality in Oberlin, thanks to CityWheels.

Cab companies based in Cleveland and operating at airport charge as much as $60 for a ride into Oberlin. The following local cab services charge generally around $30 to $50 for airport service, and $15 to $20 for service to Elyria stations. Let the cab know how many people are riding (and if you're taking any large luggage) when you make your reservation. Every company should give you a quote over the phone.

    • Cleveland Express: 1.866.828.1832 or 216.661.9105

Hopkins Transportation Services provides shuttle service to and from the airport. We recomend you make reservations in groups of five or more. The cost is $65 for 1-5 people and $10 for each additional passenger up to 11 people. The shuttle will pick you up anywhere at any time, however, there is a flat rate for early morning service of $10 per hour before 6:00 am. Call 1-800-543-9912 or go to www.gohopkins.com to make reservations. Keep in mind, you must make your reservations a day in advance. If you plan to use this service on your return trip, we recomend you make round trip reservations.
